On September 24, the Mexican president conceded: \u201c Let’s be honest, I don’t see any [solution] other than the regulation of drugs in the global marketplace, starting here, in the United States.”<\/figcaption><\/figure>In June 2012, I personally delivered a copy of my book “World War D” to President Felipe Calderon during his visit to La Paz, Baja California Sur.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know if President Calderon read my book, but few months later, on September 24, 2012, Mexican president Felipe Calderon, whose term ended on December 1<\/span>st<\/span>, 2012, declared at the Council on Foreign Relations:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c Let\u2019s be honest, I don\u2019t see any [solution] other than the regulation of drugs in the global marketplace, starting here, in the United States.\u201d (\u201cSeamos honestos: no se me ocurre otra que no sea la regulaci\u00f3n de las drogas en el mercado global, empezando por aqu\u00ed, por Estados Unidos\u201d).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Como presidente \u201ctienes la obligaci\u00f3n de analizar otras alternativas para parar el flujo de dinero hacia las manos de los criminales\u201d, reconoci\u00f3 Calder\u00f3n. Eso incluye \u201calternativas de mercado\u201d, a\u00f1adi\u00f3, sin dar m\u00e1s detalles. \u201cLa otra es entregar el poder del Estado. Pero no puedes decir eso como gobierno\u201d, dijo.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is worth remembering that Calder\u00f3n himself initiated the militarization of the fight against drugs in Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n

Calderon also lamented the 60,000 deaths caused by his own militarization of the fight against narco-trafficking. Where was he for the past 6 years? Will Calderon join the very exclusive but fast-growing club of retired heads of states asking for drug policy reform? As it seems that his market approach epiphany dates back to 2011 at least, one wonders why he didn\u2019t act on it while he was in position to do so.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
